Successfully obtained my permit today. Passed with an average score of 97% and I gotta say, I'm very happy with myself.

Waiting to hear back from the recruiter, who is on vacation so I had to call a different person, to get back to me with a definite start date.

Looking forward to starting class and will be studying al about pre-trip inspection for the next 2 weeks.

I highly recommend the High Road program offered here, it definitely helped me understand better and provided me with the practice I needed to pass the tests.

Pre-trip Inspection:

A pre-trip inspection is a thorough inspection of the truck completed before driving for the first time each day.

Federal and state laws require that drivers inspect their vehicles. Federal and state inspectors also may inspect your vehicles. If they judge a vehicle to be unsafe, they will put it “out of service” until it is repaired.

Got a call back this morning. Classes start July 27th, the earlier class filled up.

Mon-Fri= 0700-1700 with Lunch provided

Sat.= 0700-1200 for first 3 weeks. Last Saturday is our road test.

Sun.= Off

Then comes OTR training.

As it gets closer, I realize how excited I am to start this new job and how much I am looking forward to it all.

I'll keep everyone posted once I arrive in Phoenix.

OTR:

Over The Road

OTR driving normally means you'll be hauling freight to various customers throughout your company's hauling region. It often entails being gone from home for two to three weeks at a time.

Found ya...looking forward to updates. Question...we're you required to obtain your permit up front or did you decide to get a leg up on that? I'm wondering if I should get my permit, or see what state I'm going to first?????

They had me get my permit before anything. I would assume it depends on the state you're going to and coming from, based on the training locations.

Go to their site and fill out an interest card. They'll call you usually next day with information and to answer any questions you may have.

Physical yesterday went great. Apart from noting I am overweight, which I knew, I am pretty healthy.

All that's left is to get my CDL permit and head to Phoenix.

Arizona in the middle of summer?!! EEK!shocked.png I'm feeling more fortunate heading for Salt Lake City.

Good luck at school and on the road! See you out there!

I think they like having the permit obtained in your home state ahead of time because that's where your permanent address is. Just guessing, but that seems logical over going to another state and having to relinquish your current license to get a new license in a state you don't even live in. That's probably another reason they like to send people to schools close to where they live. It's easier to make sure they can be in their home state when they get their CDL testing done for their permanent license.

From what I've seen, it appears that they have some sort of indoor warehouse type structure where we'd do most of the flatbed (that's the division I'm entering) training.

At least that's what I'm hoping. But, I've been in AZ all of my life and I'm at that point where the summers aren't a bother anymore.

Hi Renae, I start at Roehl CDL school up in Marshfield WI this coming weekend. They required me to get my permit first, I live in MO. Some states are easier to transfer out of state CDL's from. When I finish school I will have a license from WI that I will then transfer to MO. Side note: I was planning on moving to MA this past spring, my plans changed, but my point is, the recruiter from Roehl at the time said to go to a private school to get my CDL in MA then contact her if I wanted employment at Roehl. I specifically asked her if the school in MA that I was going to attend would be accepted by Roehl. She told me yes. MA requires you to take everything over if you do not have at least 2 years experience. This includes your permit. Yikes. I wish you the best of luck on your quest!

Donnie, Hope your training is not near the SWIFT teminal in Phoenix. I worked across the street for Maricopa Parks and Rec. Dept. back in 2007. There is a dog food factory near by as well a landfill. Ahh enjoy the scent and brown cloud of Phoenix. Hope to meet up some time. See you in the Flatbed division sometime.

I live in a pulp and paper mill town. There's also a landfill, garbage dump, and a lovely company next door that makes fertilizer from manure and yard waste.

All my life I hear people asking the same question, "Oh God! What is that smell?!"

My answer? "What smell?" rofl-1.gif

Good luck Donnie!
