Hey people I'm a half American and half German man. I drive in germany 3 years trucks and now I will move to the states to south carolina. When a us army men come to germany he can drive with his license directly truck. So my question is what I need or I do for the cdl? I didn't know anything about rules from us drive rights. Perhaps any person can help me.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Hi Christian.

For starters you will need a Green Card to work in the U.S.

You will also need to get a regular U.S. driver's license as soon as you can. To be honest, I'm not sure what you'll need to get your regular license.

Once you have your regular license you can begin training for your Commercial Driver's License to drive trucks here in the U.S. Some states require that you have a regular driver's license for one year before you can get your Commercial Driver's License. You will have to check with the license bureau in South Carolina to see what their requirements are.

Unfortunately it's going to take some time before you can drive trucks here in the U.S. The process for getting your license, especially for a foreign citizen, is not an easy one. You're going to need at least a residence here and a Green Card before you can really begin the process I'm afraid.

Christian, with an international drivers license getting a South Carolina license will be real easy. There is a a lot of container hauling work as Charleston is one of the major container shipping ports on the east coast. When I lived there there was a steady line of trucks coming out of all the major terminals. Welcome to the U.S. And enjoy!

Terminal:

A facility where trucking companies operate out of, or their "home base" if you will. A lot of major companies have multiple terminals around the country which usually consist of the main office building, a drop lot for trailers, and sometimes a repair shop and wash facilities.
