What is the best prepaid cell phones and prepaid service for driving in the mountains, desert and other places out west?
Doesn't matter West, East, or Southern. Look for the best coverage for out there between the rocks and sage brush.
But do get a good, as-much-as-you-can-afford smart phone. Google maps is cheap at twice the price. There are many Trucker apps worth having. Also, most Trucking companies have their own apps now for dispatching and such.
Truck drivers who regularly pick up from or deliver to the shipping ports will often be required to carry a TWIC card.
Your TWIC is a tamper-resistant biometric card which acts as both your identification in secure areas, as well as an indicator of you having passed the necessary security clearance. TWIC cards are valid for five years. The issuance of TWIC cards is overseen by the Transportation Security Administration and the Department of Homeland Security.
The best to my knowledge is going to be the Verizon network as they have the best nationwide coverage. However, last time I had a Verizon prepaid phone it was ridiculously expensive compared to many other prepaids. Not sure if things have changed since then, this was several years ago.
I currently have Cricket which uses the AT&T network. I am incredibly happy with their service. I have coverage almost everywhere. There are a few places it gets spotty in Nevada and Utah. Stay away from Sprint. Their coverage is abysmal, especially out west. My fiance has Sprint and we keep it only for the unlimited data. Sitting in Hobbs, NM right now and my phone has full bars and 4G, his has no service.
I live in Oregon and have Virgin Mobile. It works in most cities and towns off the Sprint network. I've also used it in Nevada, Idaho, and California. We also have Boost Mobile which is much more popular back East but, it runs here in the more populated areas.
If I were going to change companies now, I'd probably get a Straight Talk prepaid phone that's homed on Verizon or AT&T. I like my Virgin Mobile but, I've seen Verizon phones get some good service even in more remote areas on camping trips. I've heard that prepaid phones don't roam as well though. Here's a site that might help you figure out which phone is set for Verizon or AT&T from Straight Talk if you decide to look into that route.
When a violation by either a driver or company is confirmed, an out-of-service order removes either the driver or the vehicle from the roadway until the violation is corrected.
I can't speak too much as to the usefulness of them personally but there are cell signal boosters out there made for trucks. I know they can run $300 and up. I've known a few people who've said they work good though. Just a thought.

Straight Talk operates on the Verizon network but as with any prepaid phone they are not allowed on the entire network. You may find that in rural areas a Verizon phone will work while the straight talk or any other prepaid phone will not work.
