Well me and my team driver are on the way to Memphis to start our training tomorrow. We are lucky enough to be driving our own car and be going threw school together. We are both nervous and overly excited about our new careers. I will try and write about our adventures as much as possible. Wish us luck.

Is that your partner there on the right? Or did you just come from Comic-con? Good luck in Memphis! I'll be at the terminal.

Terminal:

A facility where trucking companies operate out of, or their "home base" if you will. A lot of major companies have multiple terminals around the country which usually consist of the main office building, a drop lot for trailers, and sometimes a repair shop and wash facilities.

I started a shuttle route. Starts at midnight, drive almost to St. Louis, and back to Memphis by about noon.

Day one was not that bad. We didn't do alot just got alot of paperwork done, and had to read a few chapters and answer a few questions out of a book that was provided. Today was just checking and making sure that everyone had the correct paperwork and also had a valid CDL permit. Tomorrow will also be a classroom day which sucks but I guess it's better to get it out of the way.

Oh and on a side not make sure that your DOT medical card is marked yes on the CDL box. Mine was not but Swift is such a good company they gave me a free physical and the problem was correcred.

So far so good and I'm sure the rest of the schooling will go smooth as well.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

DOT:

Department Of Transportation

A department of the federal executive branch responsible for the national highways and for railroad and airline safety. It also manages Amtrak, the national railroad system, and the Coast Guard.

State and Federal DOT Officers are responsible for commercial vehicle enforcement. "The truck police" you could call them.

Day two.

Today was not as bad as yeaterday. We did alot more and did not have to just sit and twiddle our thumbs. We went over our contract with Swift which explains how the loan for school will be paid back.

Of your from Alabama it would be best to have your hard copy of your permit cause me and my tram driver we're almost sent home. We explained that we could get them overy nighted to the academy and we were given a little more time to get the hard copies here with us. It's just a headache that could have been avoided.

On the bright side we get to start driving tomorrow. I think we are going to do straight line backing. We are both so ready to drive. Tomorrow will be a better day for sure.

DAC:

Drive-A-Check Report

A truck drivers DAC report will contain detailed information about their job history of the last 10 years as a CDL driver (as required by the DOT).

It may also contain your criminal history, drug test results, DOT infractions and accident history. The program is strictly voluntary from a company standpoint, but most of the medium-to-large carriers will participate.

Most trucking companies use DAC reports as part of their hiring and background check process. It is extremely important that drivers verify that the information contained in it is correct, and have it fixed if it's not.
