This is stressing the hell out of me. Im trying to better myself and I have hit soo many road blocks. I was about to get hired for Western Express for 50 cents a mile.. My first job.... was going to make $1,000 a week which was my goal. Now it looks like I wont make anything near that... let alone get a job while Im on this medicine. Blah... So stressed.

1) Subs allowed?

2) Is it possible to be out of a school and make $25 a hour or close to it?

Thank you

I'm sorry, was your $25/hour a typo?

And, only your doctor can tell you if your medicine can be subbed for something that would work appropriately for you but it sounds like there are very few other options. You'll have to see about getting a medical opinion form. Reading from some DOT medical examiners after a Google search, it's a big red flag and some will approve and some won't. This will be company individual. You also don't say how long you've been on it (and we don't need to know) but, if it's been a short length of time because you've only started working on it recently, it's another red flag. You might have more luck with smaller companies but, it won't hurt to ask any company that pops into your head once you've talked to your doctor. Good luck, do your research.

DOT:

Department Of Transportation

A department of the federal executive branch responsible for the national highways and for railroad and airline safety. It also manages Amtrak, the national railroad system, and the Coast Guard.

State and Federal DOT Officers are responsible for commercial vehicle enforcement. "The truck police" you could call them.

Shaun,

You need to go to the DOT website if your Dr is not knowledgeable on the list of drugs not allowed by DOT. I have found that most (not all) prescriptions have a known alternate that meets DOT requirements. I have also found that when you inform your Dr that you are a commercial vehicle operator that they are able to switch you onto an approved medication.

As Realist pointed out, sometimes the fact that you have been on this med for just a short period of time is the reason for the denial.

Hope this helps.

Shaun, the starting pay for new drivers can vary wildly. You can count on at least $32,000 - $36,000 your first year but we've known people to make $60,000 or more. That's very rare, mind you. Flatbed jobs will tend to pay a bit better than most dry van or refrigerated jobs but not a whole lot more. It is quite a bit more work and required knowledge though. For that we have two new flatbed sections in our High Road Training Program. One section is called Cargo Securement and the other one is the New York State Coil Endorsement. The coil endorsement section is great to take even if you're not getting that particular endorsement.

Hey, if being awesome was easy most people wouldn't be average! Go for it! There are no problems in life, only challenges. Welcome the challenges and meet em head on.

CDL:

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Dry Van:

Thanks everyone for the support and advice. I did notice that people does seem to be lower than my school teacher told me. I was told if I can average $25 a hour I am doing something wrong. But hey... I get it... He's trying to sell his product. He got his $4,500 for school that's for sure. As for the Med I am on... I will do my best to find out if I can. I think my best shot is to actually go to a DOT doctor like you said and ask.

I will be honest. I failed my first DOT (before school) because I mentioned Suboxone.

Then I got a doctors note, but didn't say anything to the 2nd DOT doctor somewhere else. I passed. But from what I heard is if you start at a new job they will redo the DOT exam. I dont want to risk not saying I'm on it and it showing up. Im going to just be straight about it. I had an opiate addiction. I was put on Suboxone and everything in my life started to get better. I can assure you, that after the first week of using it you feel 100% normal. I even came across studies that shown that reflexes do not change.

As for searching google, I have probably spent 2-3 hours already and have no certain answer. Yet I know someone who I met at my doctor who started suboxone at his job.

I appreciate all the support once again. If anyone has any suggestions for companies to start off at I'd appreciate it. I must have applied to 20 jobs already and am very scared to pull the trigger. I'd love to work local, I live in buffalo NY, but I know that probably wont happen. I am willing to work Regional or even over the road if the money is there.

Regional:

Regional Route

Usually refers to a driver hauling freight within one particular region of the country. You might be in the "Southeast Regional Division" or "Midwest Regional". Regional route drivers often get home on the weekends which is one of the main appeals for this type of route.

Over The Road:

Over The Road

OTR driving normally means you'll be hauling freight to various customers throughout your company's hauling region. It often entails being gone from home for two to three weeks at a time.
