All I know is that tuition is considerable. Northwest Mississippi Community College has an 8 week course, only 5-6 students, from personal experience a very enthusiastic instructor and supposedly plenty of drive time. Tuition including books..$950.00. I doubt one can beat that. The base for the program is near the Olive Branch airport.

Yeah I decided I'm going to to to Northwest or Delta Tech. Soooooo much cheaper.

Next class at NW starts 8/14/15. Slots were still open as of today.

I have a meeting with Delta Tech tommorrow. NW hasn't contacted me back yet. So NW is $950? I haven't found out what Delta is yet.

Tuition is $880, books $70, so yes, total, $950. If you want to be proactive you could go by the school, the Desoto center campus and find the student development center- suite 237 I think. Ask for Dr. Tim Williams, a very helpful counselor who is responsible for coordinating the class. You will need your cdl learners permit which of course requires the DOT medical, a drug screen, copies of your transcripts, and a MVR report, an affidavit certifying Mississippi residency if your high school was out of state (this form can be found online with the formal admission application) and a copy of your utility bill to further verify residency if needed. The office was fairly busy and he had a decent sized list of interested parties but I believe I was the first to supply all documents for the next session. Again, ultimately only 5-6 students and if you haven't got the paperwork together you'll have some foot work to do within the next few weeks. Good luck.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

DOT:

Department Of Transportation

A department of the federal executive branch responsible for the national highways and for railroad and airline safety. It also manages Amtrak, the national railroad system, and the Coast Guard.

State and Federal DOT Officers are responsible for commercial vehicle enforcement. "The truck police" you could call them.

Dm:

Dispatcher, Fleet Manager, Driver Manager

The primary person a driver communicates with at his/her company. A dispatcher can play many roles, depending on the company's structure. Dispatchers may assign freight, file requests for home time, relay messages between the driver and management, inform customer service of any delays, change appointment times, and report information to the load planners.

MVR:

Motor Vehicle Record

An MVR is a report of your driving history, as reported from your state Department of Motor Vehicles. Information on this report may include Drivers License information, point history, violations, convictions, and license status on your driving record.
