Academic calendar still shows 4 seats available as of this afternoon.

Yeah Dr. Williams said there are still seats available and a few people interested but no one has came through all the way other than you I guess. He said the class will be only 5 people. Maybe it will be just me and you! I'm still in the process of getting my MS license and permit. Do I have to get my DOT physical before I get the permit? Where can I go to get the physical? I don't have a doctor. And I wonder if my still valid DOT physical is good here. Money is getting tight and if I can hold out on the physical for a few months, that would be great.

DOT:

Department Of Transportation

A department of the federal executive branch responsible for the national highways and for railroad and airline safety. It also manages Amtrak, the national railroad system, and the Coast Guard.

State and Federal DOT Officers are responsible for commercial vehicle enforcement. "The truck police" you could call them.

My physical at Benton county medical center in Ashland was $60 including drug screen. They did tell me however that they sometimes turn people away if they obviously cannot pass ( what criteria that is I don't know) as they don't want folks going away mad about having failed. I don't know... Just what the MD said. Anyway, the physical itself is very basic. You will have to be assertive about them giving you a copy of the drug screen as its not something they normally do and tell them it doesn't have to be an official DOT screen but rather just a urine dip stick. I would imagine though that a valid DOT physical is a DOT physical unless there is something different about class B physical parameters versus class A but I can't really se that being the case. I passed the tests at the DOT center in New Albany. I can probably find the receipts for the cost if that's a concern, can't remember off hand. I passed the general knowledge, air brake and combo sections by relying almost entirely on the learning materials contained on this site. A few questions/topics popped up that I'd never seen but worked my way through them with a little bit of logic. I didn't score nearly 100% but I did what was necessary and passed on the first try. And yes, a medical card is required to be issued a class A cdl learners permit.

CDL:

  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Here's the official list page from the FMCSA: National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners. The prices range from over $100 to probably $50. It's up to the Dr. so a phone call will settle it.

An obvious reminder: be ready for a urine test. A not so obvious reminder (this caught me up): waiting for your name to be called, don't be looking at your cell phone. All the close up visual work might mess you up for the E P Z T eye test.

CSA:

Compliance, Safety, Accountability (CSA)

The CSA is a Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) initiative to improve large truck and bus safety and ultimately reduce crashes, injuries, and fatalities that are related to commercial motor vehicle
