I live pennsylvania and I got a speeding ticket going over the limit by 15mph. First ticket in about 10 years and I am also in school for my cdl . Now am I waisting my time in going to school for my cdl? My license was never suspended or taken away. So this is my first ticket within 3 years.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

I was in the same boat, Rich. Got my first speeding ticket in like, "forever" - 15 over just like you in July last year. In November I started talking to truck companies. Knight said wait one year (to July this year). Swift said come on down.

So, there's still hope for you!

I got caught in july too. Fourth of july weekend. I dont drink and I stopped smoking like 3 months ago to be a truck driver. I definitely dont want a job. I need a career that I can actually survive off of.

My advice would be to still apply everywhere. Most of the big companies will accept you with 1 ticket im just not sure about the 15 over. I know i got a ticket for running a red light in January or February and i still had more offers than i knew what to do with.

Go to court. Explain the situation. With your clean record you will probably get it reduced

Spend. Couple of hundred dollars for an attorney. He' get it reduced probably to improper equipment. Pay a small fine and get that CDL.

So this is my first ticket within 3 years.

Rich,

From all I've read utilizing the resources on this website, you should not have a problem getting a job with one ticket in three years...as long as you weren't charged with reckless driving. Besides the ticket, I think companies are looking closely at patterns of driving habits, so if this ticket is the only moving violation you have on your record I think you should be OK. Just my thoughts....

thanks fellas I do feel alot better. I really do want my cdl even if I can get one and not have a trucking job after. Ill even take refresher courses every so often until the ticket issues are resolved. After being in class for a couple days I have alot of respect for truck drivers now.

When you don't have a cdl getting a speeding offense is not that big of a deal. Do a Google search for traffic lawyers in your area, pay like $50 for it, and within couple of weeks you'll get it dismissed or turned into a parking ticket, no school, no points on your license, it never happened. I got one before I had my cdl and did exactly that, didn't have to put it on my record because it never got there. So don't sweat it and do just that and you'll be just fine. I wish we had 2 separate licenses, because when I am on my own time, I want to get to where I need to go, doing 80-85 is perfectly safe in today's modern vehicles.. But you get reprimanded for it so yea.. anyways, good luck with your ticket, but you shouldn't have any problems, just don't tell any companies and get it resolved as quickly as possible.
