Even though I am not getting into trucking right away, can I get my CDL early? When I sign up with a company would I still need to go through the whole course, even as a refresher? It will still be a year or so before doing so.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

You can get your CDL any time you want to. But you will still need to go through an accredited school. Now if its going to be a year before you use it then not only do you have to pay for the school but now you have the cost of doing a refresher course.

Better to wait til you are ready to start driving and then getting it.
