May Or Prime Trucking To Start Out

I am thinking about going to trucking school soon. Do you know which company will be best for me to start out with? May has a guaranteed pay structure for one year, which I like but Prime seems to pay more. I am just afraid that if I go with Prime I might not get enough miles after I finish training.

I also have to take my husband with me as a non-driving passenger (he has his own career going). Do you know if Prime will allow me to take my husband with me full-time even as a new driver in their lightweight trucks?

Thanks so much for your advice. I really need it! :-)

Hello there! I do not know anything about May but my husband has recently became a Prime employee and is loving the company. He retired from the Navy a few months ago and we were looking for a career that we could do together and driving truck seemed to fit. He just went through their schooling and has his CDL. Once he is done in Sept with the second half of his training I will be going out with him to learn the ropes so that I can start school, get my CDL and we can run as a team. I know Prime allows permanent passengers. We have spoken to so many drivers that came to Prime from other companies and they can't be happier.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Everything I've heard says you get a full-size truck with Prime if you have a ride-along.
